If it didnt happen so far, now you must be excited and impatient for the big day. If you followed this guide up to this phase, you should be almost ready for a smooth move. Finalize Packing This task cannot be delayed anymore. If your house is not completely packed by now, you will have to finish up all packing today. If you cant complete this task by yourself, ask neighbors, friends, and relatives to help you finish your packing on time or call your mover and order packing services. While packing, remember to label all boxes and keep a complete inventory. Disassemble Your Furniture If you did not ask your movers for disassemble services, have all of your furniture disassembled and packed. Keep all screws and reassembling instructions. If you cannot complete this task call your movers and ask for this service. Disconnect Your Appliances Disconnect all your appliances. Be sure to dry out all water from appliances such as: washer, drier, dishwasher, freezer, and fridge. Prepare Your Oven Have your oven emptied and clean. Be sure to reinforce everything you leave in the oven so it will not move or break while your movers load it. Prepare Your Refrigerator and Freezer If you havent done so by now, this is the right time to empty, defrost and clean your refrigerator and freezer. Empty the refrigerator and the freezer completely and use baking soda to eliminate any odors. You can also leave the baking soda box in the refrigerator while it is in transit. Finalize All Trip Arrangements Although mentioned last, do not leave this task for the last minute as your moving day is going to be a busy day. Pack your suitcases and make sure you took enough clothes. Prepare a food box and include some snacks and refreshments. Prepare a box with toiletries and all bathroom items that you can only pack on the day of the move, after your family members have finished using the bathroom. I will now walk you through an example so that you can calculate your own LCV. You will recall that LCV is the value of a customer to your company. It is a measure of how much profit the customer will bring to you over the life of the relationship that you have with that customer. LCV = (sales per customer) x (estimated number of times the customer will reorder) x (number of referrals) x (percentage of referrals that become customers) (cost of sales) sales per customer = estimated average sale by customer
estimated number of times the customer will reorder = customer lifetime
number of referrals made = estimated number of referrals the customer will make
cost of sales = cost of goods x customer lifetime
Just how much is that customer worth? Lets put some numbers around this. Below is some hypothetical data from an online clothing store that sells trendy jeans, belts and accessories like rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces. annual sales per customer = $300
customer lifetime = 3 years
number of referrals made = 10
percentage of referrals that become customers = 15%
cost of sales = $180 x 3 years = $540 ($300 x 3 x 10 x 0.15)-($189 x 3) = $1350 - $540 or $810 gross profit per customer
This means that the LCV is $810. By upselling and cross-selling, you can make much more profit from your existing customer. What if you dont have the data to calculate the LCV? Dont worry, you can easily start with some guesstimates and refine them as you collect more data. Calculate your LCV in 5 Easy Steps: Take your total sales and divide it buy the total number of customers that youve sold to in a given period. This is your sales per customer. How many times do you think the customer will reorder a particular product or service? This is the customer lifetime. The old adage “A satisfied customer tells no one. A dissatisfied customer tells 10 of his friends.” is old for a reason. Today, a satisfied customer can make a casual reference on her blog or post a comment in a forum about the wonderful shopping experience that you provided. That comment could be read by thousands of people! You can make a conservative estimate as to how many people will hear about you through your customer. This is the number of referrals made. You can start asking new customers how they heard about you. As much as wed like to think that everyone that comes to us will buy something, not every referral will result in a sale. Guesstimate the percentage that will buy. This is the percentage of referrals that become customers. Finally, take your total cost of goods (or services) and divide it buy the total number of customers that youve sold to in a given period. Multiply this by the customer lifetime you calculated earlier. This is the cost of sales.
If you are listening to your customer and are truly there to help, you will discover many opportunities to increase sales. To Glue or Not to Glue? June 4, 2008

The concrete seemed to cure faster but that may have been the weather. It was during the summer and very hot out. I am sure that it was a little more waterproof and seemed to resist chipping a bit better. In hypertufa I give it a big YES! It will improve your results considerably. “Elmers” brand glue says on the label that you can use it in concrete and gives instructions. I think it said 300ml glue plus 150ml water per 10 lbs. of concrete mix. Don’t take my word for it, look it up!! I have used it as a bonding agent when pouring new concrete on top of old. First wash the old with muratic acid, rinse then paint on the white glue. It seems to help. I have seen these joints taken apart with jackhammers a couple of years later and the bond looked excellent. This was in a very harsh west coast marine application, so I say it works well! I also think that it makes a difference when added to hypertufa. My theory is that it gives back some of the strength lost due to the organic matter (peat) in Tufa. I also have an idea that it helps waterproof it a little, and that is a big benefit in outdoor projects. I made a couple of “Giant Heads” about 3 feet high with ‘Tufa. These where done over about a week, adding on every day. The ‘Tufa had glue in it. I am certain it helped to bond it better during the sculpting process. When done they seemed a little harder on the surface and water ran off better than it did on projects where there was no glue added. I can tell you they survived one -35 degree winter, they disappeared after that so I cannot report any further. Generally I would say that white glue works at least as well as you have heard. If you heard it does not work, don’t try it. I will continue to tell people to go ahead. It can’t do any harm! Copyright 2005 Delmar Germyn All rights reserved. I cannot seem to attend a meeting, visit the chemo clinic, or make a quick trip without collecting a personor twoalong the way. As if by magnetic force, someone will look at me a certain way, say one word with special force, or laugh infectiously, and I know that fate has been sealed: he or she will become my new friend. I noticed this tendency of mine as a young child. But over the last decade or so, this pattern has intensified. Moving across the country three times in four years, eventually settling into what is now our eighth house, Ive been forced out of my comfort zone on more occasions than I can count. Fresh situations, fresh groups of strangers, fresh experiences, and even fresh shopping have all had their collective influence on the necessity of forming new friendships. New babies? Rounded toddlers? The quintessential heart-sealers. Jake and Rachel, the brand new baby and older-brother-toddler-duo of new friend Heather, entered my life after a relocation; years later, theyre still an integral part of my collection. Boldness must be one of the most liberating delights of being fortysomething. For even though I have always been magnetized towards new faces and new friends, it wasnt until several years ago that I officially allowed boldness to enter the mix. And its not like I woke up on my fortieth birthday and proclaimed: I think Ill be bold now. Ive earned it. No. Something happened between childhood and adulthood which allowed me to claim the freedom to recognize that when good chemistry already existed, I could be bold about the ignition. Somewhere along the way I crept out of myself and started walking into other peoples lives without fear of rejection. Alyse wears eyeglasses that cover most of her perpetually sun-tanned face. Now eighty years old, she was in her early seventies when I first saw her. Across a crowded convention floor, packed with several hundred fellow attendees, I couldnt help but notice the smartly-dressed, petite woman with pure white hair, cut in an adorable bob with bangs, highlighted by oversized Carol Channing-esque black eyeglasses. During a coffee break on the last full day of the conference, I walked up to this complete and utter stranger and said: I have got to know you. Pretty bold going there. After talking just a few minutes, I knew we were destined to be more than friends. We were destined to be like family. We adopted each other. I call her mom #2 and she calls me daughter #3. Good chemistry drew me to her, but boldness propelled me. It ignited an already brewing alchemy of admiration and respect. Don presented a talk about his trips to North Korea at a conference Ernie and I attended in Marco Island a few years ago. Tears flooded my face as we all listened-spellbound-to stories of his incredible journey in ministry. When we were invited to attend a smaller discussion group over lunch, we felt compelled to go. More talk on North Korea. More tears. When the conference ended the next day, Don came over to where Ernie and I were seated as we were packing up our things before heading home to Miami. Boldly, yet tenderly, he said that he couldnt help notice how moved we had become by his talks. More tears. Dons words had pierced us, and he recognized that he and his wife needed to know Ernie and me. He and Molly eventually adopted me, too; I hadnt had an earthly father since mine was taken tragically in a plane crash when I was thirteen years old. Boldness ignited. Katie has likewise crept into my heart. A mere nineteen months old, I knew Id love this child the minute I laid eyes on her. Diagnosed with the same type of leukemia as Nick, this spunky toddler took one look at me and I havent been the same since. While I cant claim looking forward to going to the chemo clinic with Nick, I do recognize its inevitability; as such, on any given day that were required to be there, I always look forward to the possibility that Katie might be there, too. One day, just before Christmas, with Katies mom home with a stomach bug, and Nick, Katie, her dad and I trapped inside the chemo clinic for the day, I was able to ignite boldness. Flying solo with hours of chasing her, calming her, feeding her, and changing her, it was obvious that her dad needed a break. So Katie and I played dollhouse for an hour or so. Boldness was ignited and I was able to snatch this babe up in my arms and just love on her that afternoon. Some people collect things. I collect people. Oh sure: I have a small collection of Staffordshire figurines. Majolica, blue-and-white china, and pewter, too. (Oh yeah…I cant forget my roosters.) But I could add a rooster to my collection every year of my life and it would never matter for eternity. It would never make a real difference in my life or in the life of another human being. But recognizing that chemistry draws you to certain people-and not to others-is one of those mysteries of life. Certain faces, looks, stares, laughs, movements…they all come into play in this woven fabric of our lives. I cannot explain why we are drawn to one person and not another. Chemistry? Gods plan for our lives? Of course, we need to be careful with chemistry. It goes without saying that certain people are off limits. Married men, no matter how great the chemistry, are off limits to other women. Be extremely careful in igniting boldness for any reason there; this is a highly flammable situation. And it goes almost without saying that we need to make sure that our antennae are pointed skyward before igniting boldness with anyone. But if the little red flag-generally flying high during times of impending danger or contemplated sin-fails to rear its windy head when someone has you on hello: ignite boldness. Hug the white-haired saint, weep with the broken-hearted, and sweep up the sick babe into your warm, strong arms. Start collecting people. Not as objects to be used. Not as tokens of achievement or as status symbols of success. But as thinking, feeling, hurting, loving children of God. Each and every one of them. Chances are: they were brought into your life for a reason. Gorakphur is in the north of India and is associated with the great saint Gorakshanath who lived in the 10th - 12th Century. Yogananda was brought up in a devout loving Hindu family. At an early age Yoganandas mother passed away and this pushed the young Mukunda (as he then was) into a deep grief. However this experience encouraged Yogananda to seek beyond the world and practise spiritual discipline. In his famous autobiography of a Yogi he explains how his early life was filled with visiting various the various saints of Bengal and seeking to learn from their spiritual wisdom. One of these early teachers was Master Mahasaya who was a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and wrote the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna. Yoganandas interest in spiritual studies did not however extend to academic studies and his book explains how he sought to do as little academic work as possible. In fact at one point he left home to go on a pilgrimage to the Himalayas. His family however disapproved of his tendency to renounce the world and he was found by his brother and bought back. At the age of 17 years Yogananda met his Spiritual Master Sri Yukteswar. Sri Yukteswar was a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya who in turn had received initiation from the immortal Babaji in the Himalayas. On becoming a disciple of Sri Yukteswar Yogananda spent most of his time in the ashram of his Master where he practised meditation for many hours eventually attaining a glimpse of the cosmic consciousness. In 1917 Yogananda started work as a teacher in a school in Ranchi. The school was a special combination of modern educational methods and the ancient Indian Yoga systems to promote spiritual and physical well being. Mahatma Gandhi visited the school and was moved to say:
This institution has deeply impressed my mind. Increasingly Paramahansa Yogananda felt a call to travel to America and with his Gurus blessings Yogananda left India for America in 1920 as a delegate to an international congress of religious leaders in Boston. In 1924 he returned to America to begin a lecture tour in which he offered the highest spiritual ideals of Vedanta in a format appropriate for modern American audiences. It was also in 1924 that Yogananda founded the Self Realisation Fellowship an organisation dedicated to promoting the ideals of Yogananda and providing an opportunity for seekers to practise his teachings. Over the next 20 years the teachings of Yogananda prospered and many sincere seekers were attracted to the yoga system and teachings he offered. Therefore Yogananda sought to establish a spiritual community or ashram in Los Angeles. This has now become the headquarters of the Self Realisation Fellowship. In 1935 Yogananda returned to India for 18 months. Here he embarked on another tour meeting many of Indias great saints of the days. These included Mahatma Gandhi, Ramana Maharshi and Sri Anandamayi Ma. And are recounted in his best selling book Autobiography of a Yogi. After returning to America Yoganada retreated somewhat from public life seeking to spend more time in meditation and writing spiritual guidance for the future when he was no longer living. On March 7th 1952 Yogananda entered mahasamadhi (which is a Yogis conscious decision to leave the body). R. Pettinger enjoys writings biographies of people. I have had many life miracles from faith in God, but I do have one that stands out in my mind… After we were told we could not have children biologically, we adopted our son as a baby. When he was four years old, my husband and I were pondering whether to adopt a second child. For those of you who do not know, the process of adoption can be very emotional, with a fear of rejection if you do not qualify for a certain requirement of the agency. Rules such as age, or already had adopted one baby, so can not get another, and so on, depending on the agency. We were not on the waiting list anywhere, with the exception of a place our pastor had told us about six months before we adopted our son. But, it did not seem promising. They had only acknowledged that they had received our application, but we had not heard from them since. My husband and I kept trying to think it through, and kept asking the Lord what he wanted, but could not see any clear direction. My husband told me that he was okay with either way, and that it was more up to me than him. We were on vacation at the time, and still I could not get any “for sure” direction. Finally I prayed,
Lord if you want us to adopt another baby, let me know. I did not have any preconceived idea how he would do this, and kept it at that. When we got home, we had a letter in our mailbox from that agency, asking if we were still interested in adopting! Remember, it had been about 5 years since we had first applied. The miracle did not end there. Now there was all the paperwork, the scrutiny, the interviews, and waiting, to go through. Also, the agency was out of state. It took almost a year more. We finally knew we were approved, but did not know how long it would take. I remember a sleepless night on July 31. I had always prayed, Lord please give me a baby. But that night I prayed for the mother of the baby the Lord was bringing to me. I prayed she would have peace, and feel the comfort of God’s arms around her. We got the call, the agency had a baby girl for us, and could we get there within three days. Everything goes in fast motion and a blur at that time, and we got there. What I found out from the adoption worker when we were picking her up, “blew me away” The mother had no contact with the agency until ten days before she gave birth. She walked in off the street and said she wanted a Christian home for her baby. Our little girl was born on August 11. There are probably even more ways that God worked in this than what I am aware. Oh yes, there is one more. We were told that the agency had never done an adoption to our state, and they had tried three years previously, and first contacted the government agencies, and did not get any cooperation. They usually would not try again, but were just going through their files, and felt impressed to do so. This time they got all the cooperation they needed. Our little girl is 24 now, and is on a life journey. She is growing spiritually, and in maturity. But, whatever the outcome of anything in her life, or ours, one thing I am sure of is that God choose her for us.
